Alex Marquez penalty for Motegi sprint crash
Alex Marquez received a double long lap penalty for causing a multi-rider crash on the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix sprint race.

Alex Marquez caused a multi-rider crash on the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix sprint race at Motegi, leading to a double long lap penalty. The incident occurred on 3rd October 2026 at 15:02:42, as Marquez attacked Fabio Di Giannantonio for sixth place into Turn 3.
Marquez lost the front while trying to slow down, clipping the back of Pedro Acosta's motorcycle. Both Marquez and Acosta fell, and the sliding bikes collected Di Giannantonio on the outside. The crash eliminated Acosta, who had qualified on the front row, and Di Giannantonio, who was later seen walking into a waiting ambulance.
Penalty and immediate consequences
The FIM Stewards, led by Simon Crafar, issued a penalty notice to Alex Marquez. The penalty was classified as Type MGP-CC5 for creating a dangerous situation on the opening lap.
The notice stated: 'On 3rd October 2026 at 15:02:42 during the MotoGP™ Sprint of the MOTUL GRAND PRIX OF JAPAN at Turn 3 you caused a crash, involving rider #37 ACOSTA and #49 DI GIANNANTONIO.' As a first offence of the season, the penalty applied was a double long lap penalty. Marquez must serve it in Sunday’s Japanese MotoGP, though he retained fifth on the grid for that race. The crash notably eliminated his future KTM team-mate, Di Giannantonio, and his future employer's lead rider, Acosta.
Marquez's account of his errors
Alex Marquez's troubles extended beyond the sprint race. He also crashed during an extended warm-up session and again on lap 19 of the grand prix. The 30-year-old Gresini Racing rider admitted both Sunday crashes stemmed from an identical, critical error.
He said he shifted up instead of down, ending up two gears higher than needed for Turn 11. "Today, I made the same mistake in two sessions, the warm-up and the race," Marquez stated. He explained he accidentally shifted into fourth gear when trying to select second. Marquez described the repeated mistake as unacceptable and said he was angry with himself.
Context and reactions
Despite topping the main practice session on Friday and his brother Marc winning the grand prix on the factory Ducati, Alex Marquez failed to score any point all weekend. He accepted the penalty for the sprint incident, apologised for ending his rivals' races, and said he had made a mistake.
Pedro Acosta reflected on a lost opportunity, believing a podium was possible had he stayed on. He said incidents happen in racing but semi-chastised Marquez for trying to get a podium quite early. Acosta lamented missing a chance to gain points on Marco Bezzecchi, who is third in the championship.
Marquez also called for MotoGP to standardise long lap sections, criticising the Motegi layout. He compared its time loss to four laps of Brno and said Brno's version was better because it has no potholes, bumps, or drainage grates. Other double long-lap penalties issued this season include:
