Bastianini's Hard Tyre Pace Shines in Japanese GP Finish
Enea Bastianini delivered a stunning late-race performance at Motegi, setting four consecutive fastest laps.

Enea Bastianini's hard tyre performance at the Japanese Grand Prix signaled a major personal breakthrough. The Tech3 KTM rider set four consecutive record race laps at Motegi and came within inches of passing Marco Bezzecchi for third place at the finish line.
This strong Sunday showing followed frustration in the sprint race, where Bastianini was excluded from the top three for crossing track limits in the final corner. The turnaround was built on a tyre choice that clicked with his approach. "I'm feeling very good, because I was waiting for this moment for a long time, to ride like that, and today it has arrived," Bastianini said. Team manager Nicolas Goyon revealed the rider had returned to the garage with confidence after finding a setup that worked, stating Bastianini told the crew the hard tyre fit and suited his style quite well.
Battle for position and race outcome
Bastianini's charge was a feature of the race's second half. He closed a significant gap to the podium battle and launched a final attack on the last lap. His near-pass of Bezzecchi at the line capped a remarkable recovery. Goyon noted this strength, saying, "We know Enea is really strong in the second half of the race, and when everything is under his control, he's almost unbeatable."
Championship context and rider reactions
The battle had high stakes for Bezzecchi, who was fighting personal and professional pressures. Bestia [Bastianini] was on fire and I wanted this podium so bad, Bezzecchi explained. It wasn't an easy week for me. The result did little to help his title hopes, however. He lost further ground to the top two in the championship standings.
The points picture after the Japanese Grand Prix is as follows:
| Rider | Championship Position | Points Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Jorge Martin | Leader | - |
| Marc Marquez | 2nd | 2 points behind leader |
| Marco Bezzecchi | 3rd | 47 points behind leader |
Seasonal pattern and future outlook
Bastianini's performance was a highlight in a challenging season adapting to the KTM. His eighth place at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this year was the only time rookie teammate Pedro Acosta has not finished as the top KTM rider. The Motegi result provides momentum as the Italian prepares for a significant career shift. He is departing the Tech3 squad after this season, having left the factory Ducati team at the end of 2024. For 2027, he will switch to ride for the Trackhouse Aprilia team.
Marco Bezzecchi currently rides for the factory Aprilia team.
