Jack Miller has stated he can almost guarantee Michelin will make the untested hard tyre mandatory for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. The Pramac rider's prediction follows a sprint race marred by severe tyre degradation on Motegi's new asphalt.

Michelin brought a new, stiffer tyre allocation to the completely resurfaced Motegi circuit. Riders were given the option to run the hard tyre, which uses the same reinforced casing seen earlier in the season at Spielberg. So far, every rider has opted against using it. Miller, however, is adamant about its impending status. He said he would be on the hard tyre the next day. He even suggested he would 'pack up and go home' if forced to run it, calling the compound 'not an option' for the riders.

Rider reactions and degradation evidence

Multiple riders reported alarming tyre wear and voiced strong concerns about the hard tyre's potential impact. Fabio Quartararo, on the same bike as Miller, said he would prefer to race with the softest compound available. Alex Rins of Yamaha Factory Racing warned that the weekend's work would be rendered useless if the hard became mandatory, forcing frantic adaptation. He suggested Sunday's race could become a 'lottery' due to the uncertainty.

The evidence from the sprint was stark. Francesco Bagnaia suffered a complete rear tyre delamination, forcing him to pit with one lap remaining. Jorge Martin lost over a second on his final lap due to degradation, narrowly clinging to a podium finish. Marco Bezzecchi struggled for pace on the durable medium tyre. Miller himself experienced heavy blistering on the medium compound. "I went for the medium option. It had blisters all over it. So yeah, it will be hard tomorrow for all of us," Miller said. He chose it for stability, noting the grip difference to the soft was not massive. Marc Marquez, however, bucked the trend by suggesting the soft tyre remained a viable option for the grand prix.

Sprint race implications

The main talking point after Saturday's half-distance race was unequivocally tyre wear. Marc Marquez took the sprint win, but the story was written in the struggles behind him. Bagnaia's dramatic delamination and Martin's last-lap time loss highlighted the extreme challenges posed by the current compound choices on the new surface. The situation echoes previous rounds; opinion on the hard tyre was split in Thailand and Austria, and it has seen no use this weekend.

The main race on Sunday will ultimately test Jack Miller's firm prediction. Riders like Alex Rins have already called for an extended warm-up session should the hard tyre be mandated, to allow for last-minute adaptation. The final decision rests with Michelin, setting the stage for a strategic and physical battle at Motegi.
