Pedro Acosta has signed a two-year deal to join the factory Ducati team for the 2025 MotoGP season. The Spanish rider leaves KTM, the manufacturer he progressed with from Moto3 to the premier class, after claiming his maiden MotoGP victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.

Acosta’s decision pivots on a singular sporting ambition. He stated his move was not about financial gain but about the opportunity to challenge eight-time world champion Marc Marquez on equal machinery. This sentiment was echoed by KTM CEO Gottfried Neumeister, who cited a specific personal challenge as the core reason for Acosta’s departure from the Austrian brand.

The personal challenge behind the move

Acosta framed his choice as a matter of racing spirit. He rejected higher financial offers to pursue a legacy-defining rivalry. His goal is clear. "I want to beat Marc with the same weapon," Acosta said, emphasizing his desire for a direct, equipment-fair contest. This sets up a historic intra-team duel, as no rider has ever beaten Marc Marquez on equal machinery in MotoGP.

KTM's response and future plans

KTM made significant efforts to retain its star. Gottfried Neumeister revealed he tried personally to convince Acosta to stay for the 2027 season. The CEO expressed frustration after the Misano round, prompting a call to Sporting Director Pit Beirer about comments on Acosta’s performance. Despite the loss, KTM is confident in its future. With Acosta leaving and Brad Binder moving to WorldSBK, the factory will field a completely new lineup for 2027: satellite Ducati race winners Alex Marquez and Fabio di Giannantonio. Neumeister emphasized that KTM’s success relies on long-term, data-driven execution, not short-term fixes.

Marquez's endorsement and the rivalry context

Marc Marquez has not only accepted the challenge but actively endorsed it. Speaking to ServusTV in Austria, Marquez backed Acosta as his chosen rival. He stated he immediately supported Ducati’s consideration of Acosta, calling him the right rider. Marquez, who will be 34 next year, acknowledged Acosta’s potential to become a major name. He also made his own position clear. The veteran champion affirmed he will give 100% and not change his style for the newcomer. This rivalry, pitting Marquez’s 13 years of experience against Acosta’s prodigious raw talent, is poised to define the next era of MotoGP.

Acosta's rise and KTM's recent history

Acosta’s breakthrough win at the Red Bull Ring was a hard-earned milestone. It took him 56 races and 16 podiums to secure his first premier-class victory. His performance there was dominant, outpacing a field that included Jorge Martin, Pecco Bagnaia, and Marc Marquez himself. The win also ended a drought for KTM. The delay in Acosta’s first win was largely attributed to the KTM RC-16’s historical pace deficit compared to the leading Ducati and Aprilia machines. His current fourth place in the championship standings shows his rapid adaptation.
