Yamaha Motor Australia has confirmed its ongoing sponsorship of the BLU CRU R3 Cup for the 2027 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) Summer Championship. The series will run across four rounds of the newly formatted domestic championship.

The BLU CRU R3 Cup is a key part of Yamaha's circuit racing development pathway in Australia. Riders compete on Yamaha YZF-R3 machines. The goal is to nurture talent that can progress to international competition.

Scott Bishop, Yamaha Motor Australia's Motorsport Manager, explained the program's role. Yamaha Australia continues to invest in rider development and the BLU CRU R3 Cup provides the next vital step in a rider’s career after learning the ropes in the BLU CRU Oceania Junior Cup, he said. Bishop noted the cup is now a global Yamaha initiative run in many countries.

2027 Competition Calendar

The cup will be contested at four events in the inaugural ASBK summer season. The calendar is as follows:

A unique format applies for the third round at Phillip Island. There, R3 Cup riders will compete within the ASBK Supersport 300 category race. They will score points for the R3 Cup championship while racing alongside other SS300 competitors.

A New Summer Era for ASBK

The announcement aligns with a major shift for the ASBK championship. It is transitioning to a summer-based calendar. According to the source, this change is designed to align the series with major international championships and attract more fans during better weather.

Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle welcomed Yamaha's continued support. The BLU CRU R3 Cup has been a vital part of the ASBK landscape for nearly a decade, providing a genuine pathway for young riders to develop their skills on a national stage, Doyle stated. He called it a tremendously exciting time as the championship evolves.

Focus on Rider Development

The cup sits strategically within Yamaha's Australian racing ecosystem. It is intended as the progression step after the BLU CRU Oceania Junior Cup. Yamaha's Scott Bishop expressed hope for the future. We look forward to seeing riders continue their passion of racing in the BLU CRU R3 Cup and hope to unearth some racing stars of the future, he said.

The series confirmation provides stability for aspiring racers as the domestic championship undergoes its calendar transformation.
