Yamaha has signed 2024 MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin to lead its new 850cc project and replace Fabio Quartararo. The move comes after Yamaha learned that Quartararo will leave for Honda once his current contract ends, forcing the manufacturer to seek a top-line replacement.

Paolo Pavesio, Yamaha’s racing boss, identified Martin as the rider to rebuild the team's competitiveness. Pavesio wanted a rider genuinely interested in helping Yamaha become a competitive force again. He sought transparency about the project's status from the start.

The Rider's Credentials and Context

Jorge Martin brings proven speed and the title of reigning MotoGP world champion. He won the 2024 championship while riding for the Pramac team, edging out factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia. His current form is strong, leading the championship as the series heads to Asia-Pacific flyaway races.

His career has not been without setback. Martin endured a wretched first season at Aprilia riddled with injuries. Pavesio believes that season cost him a year of development. "Jorge made us feel wanted," Pavesio said. "I wanted someone with whom I could be transparent about the project."

Pavesio is convinced of Martin's talent, placing him among the top four or five riders in the world. He notes Martin has now found consistency in his performance. The rider also arrives managing his own injury history, having recently ruled out surgery for arm pump.

Yamaha's Rebuilding Gamble

The signing is a key moment for a factory in a clear rebuilding phase. Yamaha's relationship with Quartararo became strained as its M1 machine gradually slipped down the pecking order. This decline prompted the manufacturer to abandon its traditional inline-four cylinder concept in favour of a new V4 engine.

Pavesio admits the transfer is a gamble for both parties. Yamaha is currently struggling for performance and sits at the bottom of the standings. Yet the factory is investing heavily. Its approach with Martin was to be upfront about these challenges rather than oversell an immediate return to glory.

A key advantage in the deal was Yamaha's satellite structure. Pramac is now part of it, and its team manager, Gino Borsoi, knows Martin intimately. Borsoi's insight into the person behind the rider gave Yamaha confidence in Martin's character and commitment to a long-term project.

A Shared Historical Ambition

The partnership is fueled by a shared ambition tied to Yamaha's history. The manufacturer has won the premier class world championship with only seven riders. Quartararo, who triumphed in 2021, is one of them. Pavesio believes Martin sees an opportunity to join that small, elite group.

Yes, that is fair. I believe, however, that we have signed a rider who has won a MotoGP world championship, Pavesio stated, acknowledging the risk while backing Martin's pedigree. He also believes Martin came very close to winning another title.

History does not guarantee future success, but it provides a template. For a rider who has already won the title, achieving it again with Yamaha would cement a unique legacy. The deal rests on honesty about the present, belief in Martin's character, and this shared goal. Yamaha and Martin will work together to add another name to its exclusive list of premier class champions.
