Martin Holds Three-Point Lead Heading to Motegi After Sprint
Jorge Martin leads the MotoGP championship by three points after a chaotic Austrian sprint race, where he recovered from an early clash to win.

Jorge Martin leads reigning champion Marc Marquez by three points in the 2026 MotoGP title fight after a dramatic sprint race at the Red Bull Ring. The Aprilia rider executed a decisive pass on lap eight to secure victory and key championship points ahead of a critical five-race Asian tour.
Martin started from pole position, securing it by just 0.015 seconds over Marquez. He led through the first corner, but the race was immediately turned on its head at Turn 2. Marc Marquez launched an aggressive overtaking move, pushing Martin wide and causing him to lose significant momentum. Martin dropped to eighth place and later stated he almost crashed during the incident.
Pedro Acosta seized the lead from Marquez after the initial clash and held it for the majority of the 14-lap sprint. However, the KTM rider crashed out of the lead in the closing stages after losing the front end. By lap eight, Martin had fought his way back into contention and was running behind Marquez. At Turn 1, Martin made his winning move, stopping the bike more to ensure a good exit. Marquez chose not to counter-attack, citing the proximity of Marco Bezzecchi and the seven laps remaining, and ran slightly over the exit kerb in response. Martin won the race, with Marquez finishing second.
Martin described the race pace as similar between himself, Marquez, and Acosta. After the Turn 2 clash, he said he would be 'more clever' in future encounters. Marquez admitted he struggled to extract maximum performance from his Ducati during the sprint. The Red Bull Ring is a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking, one the Ducati factory team has historically dominated.
Acosta's Win and the Wider Title Battle
Despite his crash in the sprint, Pedro Acosta secured his first Austrian Grand Prix victory in the main race. However, he trails Martin by 72 points in the championship with seven rounds remaining. The title fight is far from a two-rider contest.
| Rider | Team | Points Gap to Leader | Key Austrian Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jorge Martin | Aprilia Racing | Leader | Sprint Race Win |
| Marc Marquez | Ducati Lenovo Team | -3 | Sprint P2 |
| Marco Bezzecchi | Not Specified | -42 | Two Third Places |
| Pedro Acosta | Red Bull KTM Factory Racing | -72 | Grand Prix Win |
Other riders like Fabio di Giannantonio, Ai Ogura, Raul Fernandez, and Alex Marquez are also considered capable of taking key points. Martin heads to Motegi after beating the Ducati rider in both Red Bull Ring races, putting him back on top of the world championship. He decided against arm pump surgery after a successful Austrian weekend, having undergone physiotherapy for an issue sustained earlier at Misano.
Motegi Awaits with Home Crowd Pressure
The championship now moves directly to Motegi in Japan, beginning a demanding overseas tour of five races in six weekends. Honda and Yamaha are pushing to prove themselves at their home circuit after difficult years. Martin is looking forward to racing in front of Japanese fans but wants to avoid a repeat of last year's Motegi Sprint nightmare, where he suffered a broken collarbone after hitting Bezzecchi at Turn 1. Bezzecchi, who likes the Motegi track and performed well there last year, returned the day after that incident to claim fourth in the grand prix.
Jorge Martin stated that an extremely important stage of the championship begins. He added that the Asian tour starts and the team is headed into it at a good time, thanking Aprilia for the great job they are doing. With the championship battle fiercely contested, every point will be critical under the pressure of the Japanese crowd.
