McGuinness Too Fast to Replace, Say Rivals

John McGuinness remains too fast to be replaced by a younger rider, according to fellow Isle of Man TT stars Dean Harrison and Davey Todd. The 23-time TT winner, now 54, has been backed to keep his seat on the full factory Honda CBR1000RR-R for the 2027 season following a series of strong performances.

This support comes after McGuinness set his personal best six-lap race time during the Superbike race at the TT in May. More recently, he secured his first road racing victory in seven years by dominating the Historic Senior Classic TT race.

Rivals Back the Veteran

Speaking on the TT's 'Between the Hedges' episode, Honda Racing UK teammate Dean Harrison questioned who could realistically take McGuinness's place. "I don't think he's doing himself any disservice; I think he's doing himself proud almost because he's doing 132mph still, he's top-six every time he's out there and he's holding his own," Harrison said. He noted that some riders nearly half McGuinness's age are further down the field.

Davey Todd offered similar praise, directly addressing talk that a younger rider should get the factory Honda seat. "I don't think there's anybody else who deserves his seat at Honda," Todd stated. He highlighted that McGuinness achieved his fastest ever six-lap race this year. "How can you ask someone to retire when they're still doing their personal best and still actually loving it," Todd added.

Performance Defies Age

The recent results demonstrate that McGuinness continues to be one of the world's elite road racers. Harrison, who is considered Honda's main hope for TT wins, acknowledged that McGuinness is still proving himself to be among the top five or six fastest riders globally.
