Marquez, Bezzecchi on scary Aragon duel

Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi have described their "scary" but "amazing" slipstream battle for victory at the Aragon Grand Prix. The duel, which occurred on lap 6 of 23, was one of the most memorable moments of the MotoGP season, according to a report from Motorsport.com.

On that lap, reigning world champion Marquez sent his Ducati up the inside of Bezzecchi's Aprilia into Turn 15. He had executed a similar move on Jorge Martin's factory Aprilia earlier. The fight was far from over. Bezzecchi fought back with a superior corner exit.

The pair ran neck-and-neck down the entire back straight, their shoulders rubbing as aerodynamic forces seemingly pulled their bikes together. Marquez ultimately completed the pass by braking fractionally later. It was one of the most spectacular overtakes of the 2026 season.

Bezzecchi’s perspective

Bezzecchi said his track position cost him a chance to fight back. He was too far left to brake normally for the final corner. This allowed Pedro Acosta on his KTM to swoop around the outside.

"We had an amazing battle with the air and the aerodynamic effect," said the Italian. He heard Marquez's bike and anticipated the move. "I said, 'okay I try to cut and go out super quick and at least have a battle for a couple of corners'."

He described a strange sensation. "The air was like sucking me and then pushing me away, and the same thing happened three, four times." Bezzecchi conceded he wanted to make Acosta's life harder but it was not possible. Check the current standings to see how this result affected the championship.

Marquez’s perspective

Marquez lost the lead at the start after a rear ride-height device issue dropped him to third. He quickly repassed Martin before stalking Bezzecchi. Before one-third distance, he began his victory charge.

The side-draft effect kept them close. Marquez revealed he even experienced a small wheelie in sixth gear while accelerating. "It was an incredible moment. A scary moment," he summed up. "There was one moment there on the end of the straight that I felt like the bikes were sucking each other. We were attached."

He said Bezzecchi eventually gave up a bit because he was in dirty air. "From that point we did the race. It was a scary moment, but a good show for the fans." The win moved Marquez to second in the championship standings.

Acosta’s perspective

Acosta capitalised on the battle, passing Bezzecchi before challenging Marquez for the lead. Marquez then pulled away with a series of fastest laps in the 1m46s bracket, leaving Acosta to settle for second.

Explaining the battle from his view, the KTM rider said, "It was my moment to try to catch Marc and Marco and try to ride with them." He was following their pace. "They were both on the left and I was just trying."
