The twelfth Oberlausitzer Dreieckrennen was held last weekend on a 5.9-kilometre road circuit in Germany near the Czech border. The event featured a series of controlled demonstration heats for two, three, and four-wheeled vehicles, including a Trabant class, with no official lap timing or race battles.

Good spirits from Saturday's action, which evoked comparisons to Jurby Day on the Isle of Man, were cut short on Sunday afternoon. Races were prematurely cancelled due to an incident in the four-wheel sports car category.

Track Appearances

Several luminaries from the International Road Racing Championship (IRRC) and European Series Road Racing (ESR) were present during the meeting. Didier Grams, the five-time IRRC Superbike champion and the series' most successful competitor with thirty-eight wins, participated. He ended his active racing career last season and was aboard a Superbike BMW sporting his traditional number twenty-six plate.

Nico Muller, a fellow Saxony region rider and a recent wildcard podium finisher in an ESR Superbike race at Horice, also took part. He rode the same machine he used for that Czech TT podium, alongside two classic bikes. One of these was a fifty-year-old 500cc MV Agusta.

Championship Contenders and Special Machinery

Current IRRC Supersport championship runner-up Petr Najman was in attendance. He had at his disposal a yesteryear Honda and the Yamaha R1 on which he won the Superbike race at the 300 Curves of Gustav Havel event. Yamaha, a Japanese manufacturer first created in the 1950s, produces a wide range of motorcycles and is known for engines like the inline-four.

Rico Vetter, a four-time consecutive Open 250cc race winner at Horice who is currently eighth in the 2026 IRRC Supersport standings, started with a unique German factory racing bike. This was a 300cc Schuttoff made in 1923, owned by an IRRC mechanic for rider Gary Johnson.

Other experienced IRRC and ESR Superbike racers on track included Christoph Kreller on a BMW S1000RR and Paul Manx on a Honda CBR1000RR. Rob Van Eijs, another series stalwart described as playing an instrumental role in ESR development, was also present.

Wildcards and Future Plans

Up-and-coming Czech talent Maxim Zanaska, a recent IRRC Supersport and Sportbike wildcard at Horice, participated. He is set to make his debut at the Frohburger Dreieck next week in Moto Trophy Twins and IRRC Sportbike races. At this event, he was a passenger in a yesteryear Sidecar outfit alongside Karel Dlabola.

Provisional dates for the thirteenth edition of the Oberlausitzer Dreieck event in 2027 are the 11th and 12th of September. The source report and photos were provided by Jan Vavra.
