Moto Guzzi has completed a major redevelopment of its historic factory in Mandello del Lario, Italy. The project, which cost over €50 million and took nearly five years, has significantly expanded the site and its capabilities.

The factory's total area is now 38,000 square metres following an expansion of 5,500 square metres. Annual production capacity has been increased to more than 30,000 motorcycles. The company claims the upgraded facility is now one of the most technologically advanced in the motorcycle industry.

Production and Technology Upgrades

The overhaul introduced new automated engine assembly lines. A robotised conveyor system now connects the engine facility with the final motorcycle assembly line.

Once assembly is complete, finished motorcycles are handed over to kilo ground drones. These drones, developed by Piaggio Fast Forward, transport the bikes for final testing. The new production building incorporates 1,300 square metres of photovoltaic panels and meets Class A energy standards.

Moto Guzzi says the design emphasizes natural light and aims to reduce the physical strain on workers. The project also added 380 square metres of new office space.

New Museum and Public Spaces

A new 3,000-square-metre museum has been built alongside the factory. It houses a collection of more than 160 motorcycles, tracing the brand's history from its earliest G.P. Prototype to current production models.

The exhibits cover road and racing machines, as well as motorcycles linked to cinema, travel, art, and military and police use. A window in the museum provides visitors with a view into the active production area.

The redevelopment created over 4,200 square metres of new public-facing space. This includes outdoor pedestrian areas, two squares, and a terrace overlooking a central piazza. The restored Galleria del Vento wind tunnel, a Motoplex Store, a café, workshop and event areas, and a new auditorium are also part of the complex.

Historic Preservation and Opening

Despite the extensive changes, Moto Guzzi retained the factory's original entrance on Via Parodi. This entrance has been in use since the factory was established in 1921.

The project was led by American architect Greg Lynn. It was officially inaugurated on September 2, 2026, with senior Piaggio Group executives and officials from the Lombardy region in attendance.

Piaggio Group CEO Michele Colaninno stated the project represented a new chapter for Moto Guzzi. He highlighted the nearly five years of work and the investment exceeding €50 million. The Mandello site has been the company's home since its founding 105 years ago.
