Martin Wins MotoGP Sprint, Retakes Championship Lead
Jorge Martin won the Austrian MotoGP Sprint race after a dramatic comeback and a crash from leader Pedro Acosta.
Jorge Martin won the MotoGP Tissot Sprint race on Saturday at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. The Aprilia Racing rider took the 14-lap victory by 1.026 seconds to retake the championship lead.
Seven-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez finished second on his Lenovo Ducati. Martin's Aprilia teammate, Marco Bezzecchi, completed the podium in third place.
A Dramatic Opening Lap
Martin grabbed the initial lead from the front row. He was quickly challenged by Marc Marquez into the second corner. Both riders braked late, with Marquez taking the inside line. The aggressive move forced Martin wide, costing him momentum. By the third turn, the race leader had plummeted to eighth position.
Marquez's time at the front was brief. Pedro Acosta on the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine seized the opportunity to pass him at Turn 3. Acosta then opened a lead that grew to over a second. Bezzecchi held third, with Alex Marquez running in fourth.
The Comeback Charge
Martin immediately began his recovery. He passed Brad Binder, Francesco Bagnaia, Ai Ogura, and Alex Marquez in quick succession. By the fifth lap, he was back in fourth place. On lap seven, Martin executed a clean move on his teammate Bezzecchi at Turn 1 to take third.
His next target was title rival Marc Marquez. One lap later, at the same corner, Martin made an aggressive but clean pass to claim second place. With Acosta now 2.8 seconds ahead, Martin's focus shifted to defending his position and avoiding a track limits penalty, for which he had already received a warning.
Acosta's Costly Error
The race took a dramatic turn with just three laps remaining. Pedro Acosta, leading comfortably by two seconds on KTM's home circuit, crashed at Turn 2a. The press release stated the Spaniard entered the chicane "too hot" and lost the front of his bike. The error handed the race lead to Martin.
Martin held on to claim the victory and the key 12 championship points. Marc Marquez finished second, with Bezzecchi third. The result reshuffles the championship standings ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix.
