Marc Marquez credits rivals' errors for MotoGP title lead
Marc Marquez says mistakes by his MotoGP rivals, particularly Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin, have been a 'sweet' present that helped him
Marc Marquez has taken the MotoGP championship lead after winning the San Marino Grand Prix. The factory Ducati rider says errors from his rivals handed him a key advantage.
Marquez secured his fifth victory in seven races at Misano. This result put him level on points with Aprilia's Jorge Martin, but ahead in the standings due to a greater number of race wins.
The Spaniard's comeback from injury, which began eight races ago at Mugello, has been spectacular. His speed and experience have been key. He also acknowledges a significant dose of luck, as main rivals Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin made costly mistakes.
A decisive turnaround
Marquez stood eighth in the championship after the eighth round in Hungary. At that point, he trailed then-leader Marco Bezzecchi by 102 points. Bezzecchi had won four of the season's first seven grands prix.
The title fight shifted dramatically at the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park. As Marquez returned to winning form, the Aprilia challenge began to falter. Jorge Martin triggered a multi-bike crash there. Marco Bezzecchi was later banned from the Czech Grand Prix for hitting a marshal during a sprint race.
Further injuries for Bezzecchi and Trackhouse Racing's Ai Ogura, combined with a drop in form for VR46 rider Fabio di Giannantonio, gave Marquez a clear path through the mid-season. He capitalized fully.
The Misano gift
The expected duel between Marquez and Bezzecchi at Misano never materialized. Bezzecchi, starting from pole position, crashed out on the opening lap at Turn 13. This eliminated a major contender and handed Marquez a clearer path to victory.
Marquez admitted the race would have been different with Bezzecchi in the fight. "It's true that Marco's mistake helps a lot," Marquez said. "The race was different because I believe that he was riding in a very good way today. On the first lap, he was flying already."
He reflected on the sudden shift in his championship fortunes since his return. "I was ready to ride at Mugello, not at my 100%, but it was also to prepare to have some chance to win races," Marquez stated. "I was not thinking on the championship because it was not in my hands."
Tasting a sweet present
Marquez did not shy away from crediting his rivals' errors for his position. He described their mistakes as a gift. "It's true that the opponents give me the present," he said. "And when I tasted that present, it was sweet."
His focus remains on extracting the maximum from himself and his Ducati package for the final races of the season. The championship, once seemingly out of reach, is now firmly in his grasp due to a combination of his own relentless performance and the stumbles of those around him.
