Middle East Tensions Cast Doubt on Qatar MotoGP

MotoGP is facing a dilemma regarding the 2026 Qatar Grand Prix, with the possibility of moving the event to another country due to the ongoing Middle East tensions. ## Uncertain Future for Qatar MotoGP The 2026 Qatar GP was initially scheduled for April but was postponed to November due to the deteriorating geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Despite the rescheduling, MotoGP is now considering alternative venues for the event. The current official venue, Lusail, remains the planned location for the November race. However, the situation has taken a turn, with MotoGP sporting director Carlos Ezpeleta confirming that the championship is exploring other options. Ezpeleta emphasized that MotoGP's preference remains to hold the event in Qatar, but acknowledged that the sport is now looking at alternatives. The main challenge lies in finding a suitable circuit that can host a MotoGP round at short notice, particularly with the current November schedule. The logistical complexities of the situation have left MotoGP with a difficult decision to make. ## Logistical Challenges and Contingency Planning MotoGP's equipment would need to be ready to travel to Portugal just two weeks after the proposed Qatar weekend, creating a logistical headache. The championship does not simply need a circuit with a suitable track; the replacement venue would also need to be capable of hosting a full MotoGP weekend, fit into an already packed international calendar, and provide teams with enough time to transit their equipment after the event. The current plan has Qatar on 8 November, followed by the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao on 22 November and the season finale at Valencia on 29 November. These dates were already moved to accommodate Qatar after its original April date was abandoned. MotoGP is expected to make a decision on the Qatar situation by the end of August, leaving little time for the teams to prepare for the change. ## Implications Beyond the 2026 Season The uncertainty surrounding the 2026 Qatar GP could have consequences beyond the current season. Qatar is currently scheduled to follow Thailand as the second round of the 2027 MotoGP championship, meaning any decision over the country's ability to host the sport could have a knock-on effect on next year's calendar too - especially should the situation in the region persist.
